Apple Pie Spice

Why buy apple pie spice in a jar when you have all the ingredients to make it at home? This cozy autumn spice blend is delicious in crisps, pies, and more.

Apple pie spice

The other week, I mixed up a big batch of this apple pie spice to make my baked apple recipe. I purposely made more than I needed, figuring it’d be handy to have around throughout the fall, but when I got done, I wondered if I’d made a mistake. I had…quite a bit of apple pie spice. Would I ever use it up?

As it turns out, I had no reason to worry, because this apple pie spice is delicious in so many things. You can use it in pie, yes, but also in crisps, coffee, oatmeal, and more. I even like to sprinkle it over apple slices for a snack! If you love warm, cozy fall flavors as much as I do, you need this apple pie spice in your pantry this season.

Apple Pie Spice Recipe Ingredients

Homemade apple pie spice might sound fancy, but don’t worry – it’s amazingly simple to make. If I had to guess, I’d say that you have all the ingredients in your pantry already! You only need 4 ground spices:

  • Cinnamon,
  • ginger,
  • nutmeg,
  • and cardamom.

I go heavy on the ground cinnamon and light on the ground nutmeg and cardamom, as these spices have more assertive flavors. You only need a small amount to add depth to your apple spice mix.

How to Use Apple Pie Spice

Mix the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom together, and store the spice blend in an airtight container until you’re ready to use it. It won’t go bad, but ground spices do lose their potency over time. For that reason, I recommend finishing off the spice mix within a single season.

Luckily, that won’t be hard to do. There are so many ways to use it! Here are a few of my favorites:

  • In baked goods. Think pies, crisps, crumbles, cakes, muffins, and more. Use it in any recipe that calls for apple pie spice, or replace the spices in a recipe with an equal amount of this spice blend.
  • In oatmeal or overnight oats. It’d be delicious in my homemade granola, too!
  • In hot drinks. Stir a little into your morning coffee or warm apple cider.
  • In pancakes or French toast. I especially love it in these , this classic French toast, and my .
  • On apples. Sprinkle it over fresh apple slices for a yummy healthy snack!
